CONTEST $75 USD prize - design a pegasus - BLUSL

Hi everyone!

Son of oddmountain's [Gaucho the Wildfire] (please note Gaucho's antlers would not genetically transfer, they are a magical item) and my [Ampere the Mother of Companions], the new character's going to include a bit of both his parents not only with design, but also personality. Gaucho and Ampere have a long and complex relationship with each other on [Helovia] - if you feel so inclined here's [one] of my more favorite moments between them, which is actually when they got into a huge break up [fight].

So I'm looking for the overall visual design of this character. Colors, markings, and ideally the expression of his passive magic (the elemental glowing). The colors should be derived from his parents, so that it's clear this character is their child, but the exact application, hues etc can deviate from them.
Ampere is a blue seal bay
Gaucho is a bay with black points

His active magics, items, and companion I've listed to help tie his overall plan together, but it is not expected that you include these.

Name: Iskra
Gender: Male
Species: Pegasus

- Passive: Lightning & Fire elemental glowing effects (specifics TBD with his design creation. Basically fun glowy aesthetics)
- Active: Can control items/objects by super heating the air around them
- Active: Transform into a tiger (normal looking tiger)

- A steel war hammer that has carvings/designs relating to both fire & lightning
- Ampere's shield (she'll be giving it to him in the future)

- Humpback whale Leviathan (will find and bond to this in his youth)

- Loves to laugh and make others laugh, class clown - this is influenced by how sad his mother will become when he's growing up due to plots, so he feels like he has to make her happy.
- Hates fighting/causing others pain, apologizes profusely when he does, natural talent for fighting though and lineage for it - he feels like his destiny is already set and rebels against it.
- Lacks the artistic ability to craft and doesn't apply himself well enough to study as a healer, though both interest him. Mostly he pursues stealthing for his adult career, wanting to learn how to be a good spy and thief so he can help others by returning their items or stopping wars with info. Problem is he sucks horribly at it. He's loud, obvious, big, glowy etc.
- Wants to bring justice to the world like his mom, so he leads a double life like a 'super hero' at night as his lion form for a secret identity.
- Loves his family dearly.
- Overall, a bit goofy, a rugged charmer, a big flirt, a salmon swimming upstream in life...

Design likes:
- Simplistic uniqueness - I want the design to be easy enough to recreate, but stand on it's own as a set character
- Contrasting colors, like a paler body with darker mane and tail or vice versa
- Primitive markings like leg barring and shoulder barring, maybe even some striping on his rump or chest or something! (Gaucho)
- Tribal markings like around the eyes/face or legs (Ampere)
- Pegasus/bird influenced like butt feathers or feathers interspersed with the mane/forelock/tail in some way (Ampere)
- Wild, rugged
- I want him to look like war, like a fighter, even though his personality clashes with his appearance (Gaucho)
- I like bringing in Ampere's blues/electricity and Gaucho's reds/fire. Some fantasy colors/design is definitely desired, but based on some realistic horse coat colors/designs.

Design dislikes:
- Too many colors clashing
- Too many extensive markings
- Too much jewelry

I've created an [idea board] for him where you may be able to draw inspiration :)

[A playlist] I've started to compile for him. May change once he starts being played!

The only constant in life is change!

Journal Entry: Sat Oct 19, 2013, 8:44 AM

So I did finally get my new desktop :3 Josh ended up going and buying mostly new parts since all the old ones weren't cooperating. I'm going to ignore the idea of how much it all cost and just enjoy it. It has a shiny white case and blue lights! They want to call it a storm trooper or abominable snowman, oi boys!

It is so much faster than my laptop now I can't even bring myself to turn it on hardly any more. I still use it for Microsoft Office because I can't find my disks to install it which makes me so pissed, how could I possibly misplace something like that? I specifically remember always putting it someone safe because I bought that with my own money in college and it wasn't cheap - I probably put it somewhere so safe no one can find ti even me e.e doesn't help that I moved twice.
I've started to get comfortable with Google Drive stuff though, although I heard some rumor Google Drive is going away soon? D: no.

I can Live Stream now! This computer is able to cope with it, but is anyone even interested in that? I don't think I'm all that exciting to watch and even more professional artists to me are something I rarely watch draw live and often get distracted and forget I'm watching them offense.

On that note, my laptop had a copy of Photoshop CS4 that doesn't have disks... I tried to copy it over to the new desktop, but it's also a change from Vista to Windows 7 so it seems to be a bit screwy. I gave up after several days of trying and downloaded the trial from the official website, so that was fun playing with CS6, although just as I was getting comfortable with it the trial ends of course :P I've thought about trying to Creative Cloud thing, but it's kind of a steep price for monthly membership considering my goal to save up and the fact I only art as a hobby with random spurts of activity.

SO! I bought Painter Tool Sai. I used the trial a few years ago and remembered liking it. I know some people swear by it and others can't stand to look at it, but it's pretty cheap and still great quality in my opinion. It took me forever to figure out how to crop yesterday but it's like an adventure!!! I am sad about losing Photoshop brushes that I loved, and I don't think as many people make Sai brushes, but I'll adapt.
If anyone has any tips about Sai, good or bad, I'd love to hear :3

Anyway my art style might start to look a bit different because of all this!

I other news, I really Want Pokemon X Y, kinda need a new DS first though D:

I forgot how fun Spore is! Been playing it all day between loads of laundry and being sick :[

The quest for building me a desktop continues. After the first blue screening resulting in a new hard drive, and then the wait to get me a new OS, followed by ram frying from overheating... we now wait some more until we can buy some more fans and new ram. So much for a free computer with all of our older parts! I guess that's what happens whenever you have Frankenstein projects though. But eventually it will be built and the day will be joyous because I should be able to play games my laptop can't handle and do some live streaming, which currently lags my laptop extremely bad.

In the mean time, I'll steal Josh's computer to play Spore and other games ;D

FAQ -- Commissions -- ALTERTE

EDIT: HOLY MOLY it was hard to find a pokemon themed skin I liked that also worked 100% :[ I give up.

So, I've been playing PokeMMO in all my spare time, pretty much from the moment I learned there existed an online, multiplayer pokemon game. Don't Starve has long been put on the back burner, along with anything else productive -shifty eyes-

I have always loved Pokemon, although there are plenty of people who love it more than me and I'm sure are much better at it than me (spams strong attack moves...) I still really enjoy it and have been having a blast! Although I've yet to battle anyone else on the PokeMMO so thus far I've been treating it like a normal pokemon game, which seems kind of silly but I'm paranoid of trying to fight someone that will kick my ass. I'll wait to level 50 at least, which I'm close to~

ANYWAY it reminded me to check out this Nuzlocke comic I was reading by :iconpettyartist: I found it years ago and loved her comic and went back to re-read her LG one.

NCLG-- Part 1 by pettyartist

And read the newest updates to her HG one.

It inspired me to try a Nuzlocke challenge for myself, and I think I'd like to do a comic of it too because I've so enjoyed her's.

No idea what a Nuzlocke challenge is? tells it all! Essentially it works as follows though:

1. You may only capture the first pokemon you encounter in an area.
- Failure to capture it or causing it to faint means you lost your chance.
- You may not use pokemon obtained from trades, mystery gifts etc (thinking I may waive this part of the rule because evee ;-;)

2. If a pokemon faints it is considered dead and must be released.
- If you black/white screen in a battle when all pokemon faint, you cannot continue the game even if you have other pokemon in the pc.
- Nicknaming the pokemon is encouraged as it helps create a stronger bond.

Although I have no experience in dong comics and don't really draw people, so it will be a nice challenge, but I hope it won't be insurmountable. I know I have a habit of dreaming big and biting off more than I can chew so I'm hoping to delve into for a bit before posting anything, but I make no promises! I likely will do most of it in greyscale for the sake of speed and because I do want to practice more black and white work.

I'm also mildly worried I will fail the Nuzlocke challenge lol. I've never necessarily found the pokemon games to just be a breeze and often have fainting pokemon, so I know I'll have to play very cautiously. I think it will be fun either way, and hey even if I 'game over' at least it'll be a plot twist eh?

I first was thinking of doing the Nuzlocke challenge on the PokeMMO, since it is mostly like FR/LG which is my preferred games (aside from Yellow) but still has some differences  in gameplay and plot, as well as some other gen pokemon tossed in. However I think the PokeMMO may have too many challenges on its own. Sometimes it glitches out, you can't set your team to 'switch', certain moves and pokemon and things are not the standard. So I think, as fun as that would be, I'd rather do the challenge with my pokemon black game. I never did finish it so maybe this will help me get back into it and leave me with some nice new surprises. Although I like each gen of pokemon less and less... but I guess with a nuzlocke challenge it doesn't really matter what pokemon you like anyway :P

Don't Starve

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 9, 2013, 11:51 PM

Recently I've gotten into a game called Dont Starve:
I suggest you check it out~

GAH! Life has eaten me up and spit me back out, although I really have enjoyed my break from the computer and am very content with my lot in life at the moment :)

I will be working still on my earth singer piece, but I may upload a thing or two before then as work has asked me to make some pegasus for them to put up on their wall in one of the camp classrooms.
I am so excited! I've never had my art on a wall before so this is kinda thrilling. I'll be making 3 pegasus I think, one large and rainbow themed and two smaller ones I want to theme around some native birds of the area and give a few more bird features to than your typical pegasus. It'll be simple shading so right up my alley ;D
I'm so stoked for it and I hope it will rejuvenate my urge to finish the earth singer image, whom's shading has me discouraged lately, among just being so busy. This week's schedule should work out nicely as far as having enough spare time for art though :3

Just went to the county fair today so I'm going to go nurse my sun burns.

Updating and Spring Cleaning

Journal Entry: Thu May 9, 2013, 6:49 PM

Phew! Just got done cleaning up my gallery and my watchers may have noticed I re-uploaded some old freebies. I only wanted to edit them not resubmit them but DA wouldn't let me change a PNG to a PSD via update :|

Anyway I realized all the freebies I have were drawings I really originally made for me, thusly I had colored them into characters or what have you and still had those colored layers, so figured I may as well turn the free linearts into psd files with easy to color layers since it wouldn't be much effort on my part already having the layer on another file. They still may not be the cleanest lines/layers around, but better than nothing :P

Oi I've had a hell of a work week...s! Summer is definitely on the horizon which means no days off for me~ I'll hopefully finish up that earthy horse pic and a few other small ideas that have popped into my brain since, but I'm just so pooped I don't have the energy to fight with shading much less anything else creative or troublesome.

I'm having fun though and feeling great :D Hope all of you are doing the same!

Inspiration vs. Theft

Sat Apr 13, 2013, 6:54 PM

I have always had the views expressed in this journal, but in light of some recent events I've been encouraged to write them down. I've tried to avoid making it overly long, but in doing so may have missed touching upon some arguments both for and against. I'd love to expand further in the comments if anyone would like to discuss.

There are no new ideas.
Not true, pure, new ideas. We are all influenced, consciously and subconsciously by our experiences and our surroundings and that gives form to our ideas and how we create them. We are constantly shaped and inspired by things in our lives and just by that alone we're all thieves. We're taking bits and pieces of what we know, what we love and what we want when we create – taking parts of old we can make something new.

This is a positive thing, and unavoidable besides – we cannot make anything that is not based or derived from at least one other thing. Anything can be adapted and improved upon and in many cases past ideas or creations need to evolve.
At my work during our summer camp we were having our morning meeting and our supervisor said to us, "we are all thieves. We see what works for someone else with their behavior management or their teaching organization and we take that and use it and it's fantastic! It makes all of us better counselors."

"Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation..."

That is a good thing.
Can you imagine if someone could copyright an idea? Everyone would have idea monopolies and things would not grow nearly as fast as they do or to such an incredible extent. It is our cooperative work and building off one another that we achieve so much and such greatness. If ideas could be copyrighted then if someone else had the idea that a sun wearing sunglasses would be awesome, then you would not be allowed to also draw a sun wearing sunglasses, or write about it etc. That seems preposterous doesn't it? Sometimes I've seen artists up in arms over something that seems similar to me.

I think too often we over-react to someone that created something too similar. In many cases the similar ideas come together without any direct influence – it is not always coincidence either; people have the same ideas all the time. This is often because people have same or similar inspiration sources that trigger the idea, particularly if it's anything with current media, but it can occur that people come to the same or near same idea in completely different ways around the same time.

I understand feeling slighted if someone creates something similar to you, because we all want to be original and unique and first at something. We all strive for that recognition and lasting impression that our creations leave on people, so when someone makes something similar they're essentially dividing the pool of attention and that can make us upset. If we created simply for the love of creating we would not be so adamant about wanting to share it with the world, which there's nothing wrong with wanting to do. Art is meant to be enjoyed by many and that enjoyment often brings happiness to the artist.

I also understand that not in all cases does someone accidentally come to the same idea/design, or build upon it at all, sometimes entirely copying it. I think in many of these cases its laziness or assumption no one would notice.
This is true theft. This is not inspiration and in many cases is not the taking an idea but a tangible creation and that I do not support.  Yet I think too often we are quick to assume that this is what is happening, when with most, it's not.

Conflicts frequently arise due to a lack of communication. Just taking some time to reasonably speak with someone if you suspect theft may reveal truths you weren't initially aware of.
For instance, your mind is usually impressed upon by the first thing it encounters, so when it comes across something similar a second time it relates that piece to the first sighting. i.e. listening to cover songs by a band not the original artist. Sometimes if you hear the cover version first you like it more than the original and vice versa.
In some cases though, that first work you saw, even if it's the more popular or better made piece, wasn't necessarily the 'original' or the first. The second work may have been the 'original', so you might be accusing someone of theft, trying to protect a piece you know about, when it's actually reversed!
Some simple communication would easily clear this up.

So rather than jump to assumptions and accuse someone of theft, take a step back and consider if you're looking at someone using inspiration instead, or simply that two people have come to similar ideas in separate ways. A similar piece does not always mean theft or malicious intent.

I do suggest that if you are consciously deriving inspiration from somewhere/something, that you credit that source. I think it would help keep the negative associations down and all goes back to some of the first things I was saying – that we tend to get so protective of what we make because we like to have the recognition for it. By showing that you were influenced by someone else, you're crediting them and their work and it's over all better manners. Although ideas are not protected with copyright, treating them with proper respect for the 'original' creator is better ethics than just freely taking them at every opportunity.

Originality by JuniXz

There Are Only 7 Stories

originality is not existent by BelialMadHatter
Originality and CopyrightLately i see a lot of people complain about this, Originality in character and Rp Group (which is rather too popular now),
So i do some research
What does copyright protect?
Copyright, a form of intellectual property law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section "What Works Are Protected."
How do I copyright a name, title, slogan or logo?
Copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases. In some cases, these things may be protected as trademarks. Contact the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, 800-786-9199, for further information. However, copyright protection may be available for logo artwork that contains sufficient authorship. In some circumstances,
Your idea is NOT original
Originality? What's that?
You heard me, what is originality? Well the dictionary defines it as:
1.  the quality or state of being original.
2. ability to think or express oneself in an independent and individual manner; creative ability.
3.  freshness or novelty, as of an idea, method, or performance."
To this I say they are right but they are also wrong. When it comes to story writing I have only one thing to say to you and your idea.
Nothing is, sure your teacher might say it is but I can tell you now there is someone out there with the exact same idea. It is all in the matter of who gets it published first. However, your idea might not be original but the spin in which you want it to take is. It might even be the tiniest of details but you can make it your own, sparking with originality. To that I say yes it is the way to go. Just don't take my word for it, you need to know these things yourself. I might be wrong w

FAQ -- Commissions

Being sick gives me a bit more time for art, lol!

I have to say I'm proud of the most recent art I've been doing, but like every artist with a critical eye I see my faults plainly. I'm definitely getting a better grasp of anatomy, lines, and shading, but I still struggle immensely with color and am no where near the dozens of artists I idolize on a daily basis. And you know what, that's okay.

I draw what, every couple of days in a couple of months? They draw all the goddamn time. It's the time and effort you put into a skill that will eventually make you great at it, so even if I don't excel in art, I have my other strong suits. That doesn't mean I'm going to just take my skills where they are though, I definitely intend to improve with each and every piece, but because I don't have the time, dedication or patience, I will get to levels of improvement a lot slower. I'm like a Magikarp just flopping around on decks, useless, battling Gyrados all the way down the pier and getting my fins kicked for it, but one great day I will be a Gyrados too. Cue heartmelting music.

The one thing I can readily say is that I do see improvement even with my limited time and crushing laziness, so I know I can continue to get better. This will never stop though, this drive to be better, and I'm glad for it because it's what will keep me humble and on my toes. I remember a couple years ago I was reading a journal entry of :iconqueenofgoldfishes: and she was talking about who she most envied, and it was a comic artist. She, who makes mindblowingly realistic and amazing paintings, wanted to be more like someone else??? I was shocked. It was because for all her fantastic realism, she felt she could never give the expression that comic artists bring to their work. It's sort of like, curly haired people always want straight hair and straight haired people always want curly hair, there's no pleasing us people.

I think ever since then I've been a little less jealous of people's talents and more respectful and observant of them. I've kinda got wavy hair, I want the stunning realism but feel I will probably never get to the same quality as some artists here who make me think I'm staring at a photo, and I want the freedom, simplicity and depth of emotion that you see in more comic-like art. Even just a year ago I finally stared at one of my pieces and had a moment where I asked myself why I was trying so hard to mimic other people's styles and reading so many tutorials, trying to force my hand to draw a certain way - I realized that my style was a little rough and little looser, and I accepted that and I think I saw the most improvement in my art from that point on, when I accepted myself. That and practice helps.

I do eventually want to take more art classes, both for working digitally and with my traditional painting, but for now it's just a past time, something that makes me happy because it usually makes other people happy. I get so much support from all of my friends with every piece, I think without them I wouldn't be nearly as good as I am today. That's why I love to do gifts or trades, because I want to try and give back with my art, everything that they have given to it.

So, time to go level up that Magikarp some more.

FAQ -- Commissions

Alright superbowl! I'm hardly a sports person, but this is the only game of the year I watch. The commercials are fun, and the cheering for teams I don't give a damn about is enjoyable, but mostly, I'm the person that comes to the parties for the food. Heh heh.

I will hopefully be doing more art in the near future, due to some recent events which have left my free time a little more open. I have some projects in mind, but when don't I, most of which never reach fruition, so for now I'll wait and see what I accomplish before blabbering excitedly about them. Even though I really really want to blabber excitedly about them.

I think I wanna get a personalized journal skin, but I dunno what, or from who.

Also, does anyone have suggestions on reducing lag when livestreaming? I'd love to stream more, but my computer cannot handle photoshop and pro caster all at once. I mean, it does, but the amount of lag when drawing makes me shriek with fury and ragequit. It would probably help if my laptop had a video card huh?

I got a second job working at an animal center, originally as an instructor (so I'd do parties, tours, camps and school trips giving people information on our animals and letting them pet) but now I've just been moved into assistant animal care! The work is a bit harder, and definitely dirtier, spending almost my whole day cleaning up animal poop, but it's well worth it because I get to spend so much more time with all of them. We have a lot of: rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes (boas and corns), lizards (skinks, geckos :D), turtles, tortoises, frogs, insects (cockroaches and walking sticks), and birds (doves, cockatiels, umbrella cockatoo, african grey). So that's exciting!

My other job is still at SeaWorld, again with the education department in what's called a narrator. I stand in front of various exhibits and give a variety of presentations and answer any guest questions. It's an absolute blast, and hopefully I'll get to work through the company and start actually working with the animals  and not just talking about them ;D for now though, I'm enjoying every bit of it, especially with summer camp soon to start up again. Kids are a crack up, most of the time.

I guess that's enough to make this journal entry seem worthwhile now. Back to ref searching!

1. What programs do you use?
Digital: Photoshop CS4, SAI Painter, Bamboo Fun tablet
Traditional: Acrylic paint, soft pastels, number 2 pencil

2. How long have you been drawing?
Since I can remember! I've only taken a few art classes from middle school to college, so most of it is just practice practice practice and looking at other artists and tutorials. I still have a long way to go, especially since I don't have the time to always do art, but it's just a fun hobby of mine :]

3. Do you take requests?
Not really, I don't like when people ask me to do art for them, it makes me feel obligated and pressured. Sometimes I might ask for requests, but otherwise I try to do a lot of free art as it is, both gifts and freebies for everyone. Also I like trades ;)

4. Do you take commissions?
Sometimes! You should check my commissions journal for info on my pricing and availability.

5. What things do you draw?
I'm down for almost anything, but I definitely lean towards drawing animals like horses, big cats and wolvey things. I like to do monsters though and other species, and am trying to get better with humans and landscapes, but those are the most difficult for me right now.

6. Can I use your art?
If it's under the freebie section then yes go right on ahead no need to ask! I'm pretty lenient with my freebies, so you can modify them, use them anywhere and even use them commercially (most of the time). Just please credit me in some fashion, be it in the art, in the description or directing people towards me when they ask! As far as all my other art, I'll have to say no since it's usually for other people and just for them.

7. Who are you?
I go by Bluside (BlusideofLife) in the internet world, but you can call me Blu or Haylee. I'm just your typical art aficionado mucking around with her own 'skills' in her spare time. I'm a college graduate with a degree in Animal Science and Management, and I have a huge affection for the ocean, western themes, and fantasy. Blue is my favorite color and Lions are my favorite animal. I also love geckos, cats, dogs, and horses! I actually own a blue roan Quarter Horse mare named Rainy.

8. Do you have a 'main character' ?
My main character, or what I like to call my art mascot, is Ink -…
I would love any and all art with him! Gift art is always welcome, I'm usually available for trades, and sometimes am interested in getting commissions done of him, so just let me know. He doesn't have to be a horse, just try to keep with his lanky/skinny characteristics and long tail with whatever form you choose. He's all black, but is a very shiny type of black, and drawings of him should always be in black and white or gray-scale (some hints of colors is okay for artistic flare). Feel free to get creative with him and experiment if you like :]
